Luxury in the Details: Insights from Kate Winslow’s FAM Journey

Luxury in the Details: Insights from Kate Winslow’s FAM Journey

Experiencing Japan through the eyes of a guest

Kate Winslow, EXO’s Sales Manager for North America, recently travelled across Japan alongside a group of Gifted Travel Network advisors, exploring Kyoto, Hiroshima, Miyajima and Kanazawa through a series of immersive cultural encounters designed to reveal the country’s distinctive style of luxury.

While Japan is often associated with refinement and efficiency, the journey showed that its luxury is defined not by excess, but by intention, craftsmanship and deeply rooted cultural rituals.

‘Japan is a country where precision, beauty, and hospitality are elevated to an art form’, Kate shares.

These familiarisation journeys allow our advisor partners to experience destinations as travellers do, building firsthand understanding of pacing, atmosphere and the types of moments that resonate most strongly with different client profiles.

Read on for Kate’s reflections and practical insights for designing journeys in Japan.

Mastery through detail

Kyoto offered the most immediate introduction to Japan’s philosophy of precision. A hands-on sushi-making lesson revealed the discipline behind even the simplest dish, where technique, repetition and respect define mastery. Rather than a culinary activity alone, the experience helped illustrate how everyday practices in Japan carry cultural meaning.

A private tea ceremony and Zazen meditation session further reinforced this perspective. Both invited the group to slow down, observe movement and appreciate the significance behind small gestures.

Reflection and balance

In Hiroshima, Kate shares that history and resilience shaped the experience. The city’s reflective calm offered powerful context, while nearby Miyajima brought moments of awe and serenity.

With the iconic floating torii gate as a backdrop, the group enjoyed champagne and hors d’oeuvres on a sunset cruise and then explored Itsukushima Shrine the next morning before the crowds arrived.

These carefully timed experiences demonstrate how pacing and access dramatically shape a guest’s connection to a destination, not by adding more sights, but by experiencing them differently.

Living traditions

Kanazawa provided a final, elegant chapter to the journey. Known for its craftsmanship and preserved traditions, the city revealed the quieter side of Japanese luxury.

Kate shares that private geisha dinner became one of the most memorable moments of the trip, combining artistry, storytelling and cultural continuity in a setting that felt both personal and authentic. The group also met a 16th-generation samurai descendant, gaining insight into the cultural values that continue to influence modern Japanese society.

For advisors, Kanazawa is especially compelling for repeat Japan travellers seeking something beyond the classic Golden Route.
